What to blog about
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I was down at the local Stewart’s this morning getting a cup of coffee when I ran into an old friend I haven’t seen in over a year.
Jim made a mistake right off by asking me if I was still on the Internet.
Naturally I started talking about WordPress and blogging. After going on for a while, Jim interrupted to ask me a question.
“But what do all these people blog about.”
I replied with the simple answer, “Whatever they want”.
But that also got me thinking about what people do blog about.
And I guess more importantly why they blog about it.
Is it to make money? Something they are just passionate about?
Both? Then what kind of Ego do you need.
You have to remember when you publish a post on your blog or even write a regular web page, you are putting it out there to the world, the world man.
You either got to have some kind of ego to think anyone actually wants to read what you have to say, or you don’t care if anyone reads it or not. You just have a need to get it out there.
Myself I’ve got the Ego thing going on. I don’t hide behind any username for the most part and figure you either like me or you don’t.
If you like me, cool. If you don’t, oh well, I’ll survive and so will you.
But this is about why you blog, not my popularity.
Like I mentioned before I think the three main reasons for blogging are
1.To make money
2.Passionate
3.Both
It’s usually pretty easy to spot them.
The ones that are about making money usually are just sales pitches if they are promoting a product. The ones that are looking for clicks through AdSense or some other source just don’t have any content on them that makes it worth sticking around.
Over at the Lorelle on WordPress blog there is an interesting post titled
Define Blogging.
She has a few different quotes on what blogging is, but this line, I think sums it up the best.
For me, a blog is a communications tool. What you do with it from there is up to you.
I think with many, especially those trying to make money, the first part of that statement is kinda forgotten.
Now having the right theme and using the right plugins is important, but I think to many people believe that is all you need to have a successful blog. If there not getting any traffic or sales, then they figure they didn’t use the right plugin or they need to use a different bookmarking site. Unless you’re looking for information that they happen to have, the page usually reads like a typical salesletter.
Maybe they’re just not communicating.
Then you have the next two groups. I think the only real difference with these two groups, is one decided to monetize their blogs and one didn’t.
Most of the blogger’s in these groups seem to be able to communicate a little better then those in the first group. The good ones make it seem like they are sitting across the table from you talking. I won’t pretend to know the real reason for this. I tend to think it has to do with the passion or at least the enjoyment they get from writing about their subject. I know that even though I don’t write daily, I sure do enjoy writing about WordPress.
