WordPress is a blog or weblog publishing system that is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database. It is the official successor of b2/cafelog. The name WordPress was suggested by Christine Selleck, who was a friend of the lead developer Matt Mullenweg.
WordPress first appeared on the scene in 2003 and has continued to grow in popularity ever since. Releases are named after well known jazz musicians.
With the release of WordPress 1.5 in February 2005, one was able to manage static pages. This allowed content pages to be created outside the normal ‘blog’ chronology and was the first step away from being simple blog management software to becoming a full blown Content Management System.
Also in that release a new template system was put in place which allowed users to easily change the appearance of their blogs.
With each release WordPress has added more features that continue to make it the blogging/CMS platform of choice for more and more people every day.
Recent releases of WordPress have added such features as rich editing, image uploading, faster posting, widgets, home page control, native tagging support, and full support for Atom 1.0. That is in addition to many much needed security fixes.
I started seriously using and learning WordPress in February 2005 with the release of version 1.5. Before that I had played with it briefly, but wasn’t real impressed with WordPress until the release of that version.
What impressed me then was the ease of learning how to use WordPress and the flexibility you had with it. The ability to add static pages and the on slot of plugins and themes made me realize WordPress was the future of websites.
Since that time I have been using WordPress almost exclusively for building websites for myself and clients. Occasionally I will build a static website or try a different blogging or cms platform, but I always return to WordPress.
It was in 2006 that I wrote the first edition of Wp-Revealed. Since then WordPress has changed and so has the whole ebook concept I first used. Now there is the Wp-Revealed 2 edition ebook that still walks you through all the built in WordPress functions plus installing.
Plus a members site and forum to stay up to date with WordPress and to explore additional uses and features.
